Your Mouthwash Can Be The Cause Of Your Swollen Gums

Inflammation of the gums or swollen gums is the reaction of the gum tissues to determinants that causes irritation. Harmful bacteria that reside in the mouth especially in between the gumline and the teeth are the major cause of swollen gums. Bacteria in the form of plaque produce toxins that cause irritation to the gum tissues resulting to bleeding and swollen gums.

There are also other factors that can contribute to the swelling of the gums, and allergic reaction to commercial oral care products that contains chemicals as their active ingredient. Most of the commercial toothpastes and mouthwash contains harmful chemicals that can be an irritant to the gums. Most of the commercial mouthwashes contain alcohol in which it can contribute dryness of the mouth and poor salivation. Saliva is the mouth’s natural defense against harmful bacteria that causes swollen gums and gum disease. Low level of saliva invites bacteria and gum infection, thus alcohol- base or commercial mouthwash can make the condition even worse. Natural oral rinse is effective in eliminating harmful bacteria and is safe to use and combined with regular brushing and flossing.
